      2. 12/09 The Prism of Evil Media

        1. Graham Harwood (YoHa) and Matthew Fuller (Goldsmiths, University of London) will discuss grey media in two lectures on Thursday 12 September at The New Institute. Grey media are the objects and systems that shape our lives without our noticing: microwaves, paper shredders, databases, Post-it notes, workflow systems, tampons. The curator and researcher Annet Dekker will lead the discussion at The Prism of Evil Media. The event comprises part of the summer programme The Ruin.

        2. Graham Harwood (YoHa) en Matthew Fuller (Goldsmiths, University of London) geven tijdens The Prism of Evil Media op 12 september in Het Nieuwe Instituut twee lezingen over ‘grijze media’.
          Grijze media zijn objecten en systemen die het leven onopgemerkt vormgeven, zoals magnetron, papierversnipperaar, databases, post-it notes en workflowsystemen. De discussie wordt geleid door curator en onderzoeker Annet Dekker. The Prism of Evil Media is onderdeel van zomerprogramma De Ruïne.

        1. The term “evil media” comes from Matthew Fuller and Andrew Goffey’s book of the same name. Evil Media is a philosophical handbook on how power works in the 21st century. The authors examine the abstract infrastructures that operate in our society and speculate on numerous ways these systems can be manipulated. Without passing judgement, they investigate from various angles the invisible power grey media exert over our behaviour.

          Inspired by the book, the artist duo YoHa (Graham Harwood and Matsuko Yokokoji) showcase examples of grey media in the installation “Evil Media Distribution Centre”. The artists have asked various contributors to select grey objects and provide the production date, designer’s name and background information for each, revealing the thinking that lies behind its origins. The piece illuminates motivations behind processes and products, placing them in a new light and bringing long-forgotten meanings to the surface. At the same time, it offers a spectrum of possibilities for manipulating grey media. The Evil Media Distribution Centre uses humour as it shows how sorting algorithms, workflow systems, abstraction layers and management ideology shape our lives.

        2. De term Evil Media komt van het gelijknamige boek van Matthew Fuller en Andrew Goffey. Evil Media is een filosofisch handboek over de rol van macht in de 21e eeuw. De auteurs nodigen lezers uit om de abstracte infrastructuren te verkennen die in onze samenleving werkzaam zijn. Vervolgens speculeren ze over talloze manieren om deze systemen te manipuleren. Zonder een oordeel te vellen over grijze media proberen zij aan de hand van een aantal strategieën de onzichtbare macht van deze media op ons gedrag te doorgronden.

          Geïnspireerd op het boek presenteert kunstenaarsgroep YoHa (Graham Harwood en Matsuko Yokokoji) in de installatie Evil Media Distribution Centre een aantal voorbeelden van grijze media. Verschillende mensen zijn gevraagd een grijs object te kiezen en vervolgens de productiedatum, ontwerper en context aan te geven. Deze eenvoudige strategie maakt de gedachte achter de oorsprong van het object duidelijk. Het geeft inzicht in beweegredenen en motivaties waardoor processen en producten in een ander licht komen te staan. Betekenissen die we al lang vergeten waren komen naar boven. Tegelijkertijd biedt het een scala aan mogelijkheden voor manipulatie van deze grijze media. Het Evil Media Distribution Centre laat met humor zien hoe sorteeralgoritmes, workflow systemen, abstractielagen en de ideologie van management ons leven vormgeven.
